The four-story, exposed brick building was constructed on the former site of the Pacific Power Company in 1906 by William H. Crocker, immediately following the Great San Francisco Earthquake. Crocker was the son of one of the ‘Big Four’ responsible for building the transcontinental railroad. He and his bank were major forces in the reconstruction of the City.1 Ecker was originally built as an ice house, in a neighborhood created to support the luxury lifestyles of wealthy San Franciscans and dominated by printers, publishers and apparel manufacturers by the late ‘30s. More recently the neighborhood has become home to Golden Gate University and ‘dot com companies such as Yelp, Twitter and CNET. Today, fashionable restaurants, clubs and galleries add glamour and excitement to the location.
